Lagna is the most time-sensitive value in a kundli. A new sign rises roughly every two hours, and the exact interval depends on your latitude, so a birth recorded twenty minutes late can hand you the wrong lagna and, with it, the wrong lord for every one of the twelve houses.
Use this tool when house-based questions matter: career direction from the tenth, partnership from the seventh, health from the sixth, gains from the eleventh. It is interpretive guidance for planning and self-reflection, not medical, legal, or financial advice, and it does not promise events.
What lagna is and why houses depend on it
The ascendant is the intersection of the ecliptic with the eastern horizon at your birth place and birth moment. Because the Earth rotates, that point moves through all twelve signs in roughly twenty-four hours, which is why lagna needs a clock time while the Moon sign only needs a few hours of accuracy.
In whole-sign house practice, the rising sign becomes the entire first house, the next sign the second, and so on around the chart. Every planet therefore acquires a house position, and every house acquires a lord, purely from where lagna falls.
That is the practical stake. Your chandra rashi describes emotional temperament; your lagna decides which area of life each planet is actually operating in. Two people with an identical Moon sign and completely different lagnas will read very differently.
How to enter birth time and place precisely
Use the clock time written at birth, to the minute if you have it. Hospital admission notes, a birth certificate, or a kundli prepared soon after birth are the reliable sources. A remembered morning or evening is not enough for house work.
Birth place must resolve to real coordinates because latitude changes how long each sign takes to rise. Signs rise unevenly, and at higher latitudes the difference between a short-rising and long-rising sign becomes large. City, district, and state usually resolve cleanly; enter latitude and longitude directly if the search is unsure.
Timezone should match the civil clock in force at that place on that date, including any historical offset. Getting the timezone wrong shifts the universal time of birth by whole hours, which almost always changes lagna.
How the calculation works (Lahiri ayanamsa)
Astro Hindi converts your civil birth time to universal time, computes local sidereal time for the birth longitude, derives the tropical ascendant using the birth latitude, then subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa to give the sidereal lagna used in Vedic practice.
The result includes the lagna degree, not just the sign name. Degree matters for two reasons: a lagna in the last degree of a sign is fragile against small time errors, and several classical techniques key off the exact ascendant degree rather than the sign alone.
Planetary longitudes shown alongside lagna use the same sidereal frame, so the house placements you read here stay consistent with the Moon sign, nakshatra, and dosha screening produced elsewhere on Astro Hindi.
Worked example: how twenty minutes changes everything
Consider a birth in Pune on 3 August 1988. At 05:50 Asia/Kolkata the rising sign is Karka with lagna near 27 degrees; at 06:10 the same day, lagna has moved into Simha. The Moon sign is identical in both cases, so a family relying on rashi alone would notice nothing.
The consequences are large. With Karka lagna the chart lord is the Moon and the tenth house falls in Mesha, ruled by Mars. With Simha lagna the chart lord becomes the Sun and the tenth house shifts to Vrishabha under Venus. Career reading, remedy direction, and dasha interpretation all change.
So when the birth time is uncertain, the right move is to say so. Read both candidate lagnas, note which conclusions are shared between them, and treat anything that differs as unresolved rather than picking the more attractive option.
Honest limits and next steps
This calculator gives lagna and the house frame. It does not perform birth-time rectification, and it cannot recover an unknown birth time from life events — that is a specialist consultation task, not something a public form should pretend to do.
Lagna also does not override the rest of the chart. A strong first house does not cancel difficult transits, and a difficult lagna lord is not a sentence. Read the ascendant as the map key, then read the whole map.
